Albanians continued a satisfying season with a six try to two defeat of strugglers Westcliff and the bonus point win put OAs in second spot in the League rankings.

Head Coach Dan George pronounced himself ‘happy but frustrated’ and went on to give some idea of the strategic thinking behind the squad’s approach to the current campaign.

‘We need a strong set piece, first up! Our scrum fits the bill though we must be aware we are not the biggest pack on the field. This means we must win quick ball in all areas, tight or loose. If we can do that,’ he continued ‘we can inflict damage with a fast, talented back line. This approach takes fitness, precision and application and, whilst much is going right for us, we are still a work in progress.’ He also made reference to the wind and the fact this made the lineout a lottery for much of last Saturday.

He was happy with the defence and breakdown play. But this will need to remain at a high level over the next tough five weeks starting against leaders Blackheath on Saturday week.

Alex Noot started the day with a clever break to the posts and Sam Jones obliged with the extras. Gradual Westcliff pressure allowed lock Luke Potter an attacking opportunity close to the line at the end of the first quarter. The wind played havoc with the conversion attempt.

A mighty, wind assisted clearing kick found touch in the hosts 22 and skipper Ash Ilston made the most of the position. Jones again converted but was off target target when Elliott McPhun darted over just before half time.

Ten minutes into the second period Kaz Henderson broke away as the defence floundered behind him. Jones converted the bonus point try for a lead of 24-5.

A fine effort from home skipper Greg Bannister brought Westcliff back into the match but late tries from Andrew Nurse and Caswell Sparks, both converted by Jones, sent Albanians home happy.
