Women's Championship South 1
OA Saints began their Championship South 2019/20 campaign by travelling away to a strong Trojans outfit, after a strong preseason. A team bolstered by new arrivals quickly established a lead by piecing together phases, where a tip pass from Georgina Kreysa to Mica Gooding, allowed the captain to open the scoring under the posts which included a successful conversion. After Trojans fought back to score a try of their own, new signing Rocky Clark added the next points after battering her way over the tryline to extend Saints’ lead to 5-12. Physicality was certainly the theme of this game, as were penalties and a yellow card for both teams, but Saints remained strong with Sam Ganske fighting her way through their narrow defence to score from out wide after a show and go. An extended injury stoppage brought the game to a hold, upon the proceding scrum, the Saints launched a fluent attack down the blindside which resulted in fullback Siobhan Drummond touching down to put Saints further ahead, 5-26. Saints were now chasing the bonus point but Trojans stopped that hope and scored a try of their own before the close of play, finishing the game with a Saints win of 10-26.
Head Coach Sarah McKenna:
A fantastic start to this new challenge. Despite being the promoted team it was impressive to see the players go out from the off and set the level from the very off. Being clinical is an area where there is a much room for improvement. No doubt the players will feel frustrated that tries were left on the field but we should all be very excited that the team have no problems creating opportunities.
