An unexpectedly sunny Sunday afternoon in March at Old Albanians RFC, brought
out smiles and energy within the 40 players who participated in the Pitch Up and Play
event hosted by the OA Saints Ladies and Junior Girls.
It was great to see new faces some of whom had never touched a rugby ball before but
were eager to get involved. The 1.5 hour session was lead by Women’s Rugby World
Cup Winner Kat Merchant along with Harry Harrison, Community Rugby Coach.
Kate Barnes, Club Captain of the OA Saints commented ‘It’s great to see such a
diverse range of abilities and find out an individual’s motivation for coming down
today. Some are bored of the gym, not seeing results, some want to improve technical
ability and others just have fun and be part of a team sport. From this session alone we
have 3 new players registered with the OA Saints, I’m delighted!’
The session introduced the girls to tackling, basics of the game, passing kicking and
concluded the session by experiencing match play. It was designed to build
confidence, femininity and provided the perfect platform for young girls to literally,
‘give it a go.
