OA Saints made a happy return to Woollams this weekend, welcoming Beckenham Ladies on Sunday afternoon under cloudy skies. The rain held off, but it was a stormy start for Beckenham who were 17-0 down at half-time, although they rallied after the break and kept Saints scoreless in the second half.
Placed second in the league, Beckenham were marginal favourites going into the game and the first twenty minutes were cagey, with both teams employing a variety of kicks and playing for territory. The deadlock was broken on 22 minutes, when inside centre and Captain, Robyn King, went over in the corner. Fly-half Katie Robertson narrowly missed the conversion, making it 5-0 to the Saints. An enforced reshuffle in the Saints backline followed, as scrum-half Nicky Cameron went off for a head injury assessment. Full-back Alice Finn stepped in at 9 and within minutes Saints scored again, this time outside centre Claire McKenna going over in the opposite corner. Again, the conversion was too tight for Robertson, but Saints were two scores ahead. With Cameron just returned to play, Robertson caused a momentary concern for the bench, but was able to continue after treatment and set the back-line free for McKenna to score again before half-time. King, taking over the kicking duties with Robertson’s ankle now heavily strapped, slotted the conversion to make it 17-0 to the Saints at the break.
Beckenham’s coaches must have had some strong words for their team at half-time and they came out raring to go. Saints kept their composure under increased Beckenham pressure, but despite several good breaks by the forwards were unable to convert their pressure into points. Beckenham finished the game off with a score in the corner, mauling the ball over the line from ten metres out.
Saints’ next match is away to league-leaders Blackheath on 29th November, and they return to Woollams on 13th December to take on Romford & Gidea, 2pm Kickoff.
