Saints stung by Wasps

OA Saints finished their league season yesterday with a narrow loss in the Championship 2 SE v SW Playoff game, held at Cobham RFC.  A gusty wind and drizzle made conditions less than ideal for Saints’ brand of running rugby, but Sophie Tyler gave her team the lead early in the game. Wasps hit back with a penalty and followed that up with two tries, making the half-time score 13-5 to Wasps II.

Saints used the break to reorganise and in the second half the forwards started to dominate at scrums, and scrum half Bethan Jones was able to bring Nicky Cameron and the back line into play.  Jones, Full-back Katie Robertson and winger Claire McKenna combined to create and finish three overlaps, McKenna scoring a hat-trick of tries down the open-side.  Wasps hit back, in between McKenna’s tries, and the match was poised at 22-20 in Saints’ favour with 10 minutes to go. Sadly for Saints, Wasps scored a final penalty with only a few minutes left on the clock, and managed to hold out for the final whistle.

The final score was 23-22 to Wasps II. Despite scoring more tries, Saints couldn’t quite get over the finish line.  Wasps II will now be promoted to Championship 1 South and Saints will remain in Champ 2 SE and try to reproduce their undefeated league form of this season to give themselves another shot at promotion next year.  Saints’ forward of the match was Emma Cramphorn and back of the match, Claire McKenna.

Saints are always looking for more players and would be happy to welcome women over the age of 18 to training to give rugby a try – no experience necessary!  Pre-season training will start in July – watch this space for details!  We also offer rugby for 12-18 year old girls, with our U13, U15 and U18 sides run by Craig Ihlenfeldt and our world-cup-winning ex-Saint, Jane Everett.
