Thanks to the inclusion of a handful of B teamers OAs had the unusual luxury of having 4 replacements as they took the field against a Stockwood Park (SP) side who they had lost to earlier in the season.
OAs kicked off and a SP fumble immediately gave OAs possession in the opposition 22. A couple of good carries by the OAs pack was followed by Jack barging over for the opening score. George W added the extra points. 7-0 to OAs after a couple of minutes, much to the amazement of the home crowd used to a slow OAs start.
Encouraged by their early success OAs pressed for another score and from a 5 yard scrum Leon picked up from the back of the scrum and looked certain to score but unfortunately lost possession as he was about to touch down. SP were able to clear their lines and an excellent run from their impressive full back took play into the OAs 22. OAs were penalised at the breakdown and SP took advantage with a quick penalty to cross in the corner for an unconverted try.
OAs seemed to have the upper hand in the backs with the centres, Oscar and Jaiden, making good ground with their strong running. However, excellent SP tackling meant OAs were unable to fully capitalise.
A good initial carry by Tom McG was followed by an excellent run from Jaiden and enabled OAs to establish an excellent attacking position close to the SP line and Jack was again on hand to pile over for his second try resulting in a half time score of 12-5 to OAs.
Unfortunately OAs started the second half slowly and coughed up possession immediately from the kick off. Some uncharacteristically loose tackling resulted in a SP try under the posts with the conversion tying the scores at 12-12.
OAs were benefitting from SP ill discipline at the breakdown and a succession of penalties enabled them to set up a line out close to the SP line. The ball was gathered cleanly and the resulting maul was well set and enabled Lachlan to dive over for a well worked try.
SP were struggling for field position and were forced to kick from defence deep into OAs territory. The ball was well gathered by Josh whose good run and pass released Jaiden for another powerful run taking play back into SP territory where OAs were awarded a scrum following a SP infringement. Quick scrum ball and slick passing saw Oscar make good ground before spilling the ball in the tackle. Fortunately Leon was at hand to gather the loose ball and crash over for a converted try. 24-12 to OAs.
Although SP were trying hard to get back into the game they were thwarted by an excellent defensive effort by OAs with the highlight being Ben C’s excellent tackle on his opposite number who seemed to be a foot and a half taller.
OAS continued to look for another score to put the result beyond doubt and their efforts were rewarded when Lachlan crashed over to make the final score 29-12.
An excellent effort from OAs with every team member contributing to a good victory over tough opposition which will hopefully boost confidence ahead of the upcoming league fixture against OVs.
