A crisp, cold but beautifully sunny Hertford RFC greeted the OAs faithful for a 10am kick off. Due to a ground frost kick off was delayed for 15 minutes to allow the spectators an extra cup of coffee and the grass to turn green.
As reigning champions OAs Bs had the weight of expectation on their shoulders but carried through a fabulous team spirit from last season which always adds to their never say die mentality.
Hertford play their rugby two divisions down from OAs but as we all know this is not always a fair reflection of results if focus and concentration is not at 100%.
As the game progressed it was clear to see that the Bs had indeed “turned up” for this game and in the end won by a comfortable margin.
The first half saw trys from Will, Gus and two from the recovered Ewan. Gus adding and extra two points from the final kick of the half. 0-22
The halftime touchline chatter was more focused on the handling errors and the simple mistakes that would have been punished by a stronger Hertford side. The backs were guilty of not making simple passes before contact so that knock-ons and poor passes were the result.
However we were dominating and that was a joy to behold.
The second half was another display of dominance with more of the same from the buzzing Bs!!
Tries from Jack, Alex (took the glory after James was tackled 6 inches short of the line), Gus, Oscar and another solo sprint from Alex saw the winning margin reach 45 and the game was called to a halt with 15 minutes to spare.
All in all a dominant display but played with real team spirit, fair play and a respect for a good Hertford side who on their day could have dented OAs clean sheet.
Our thanks to Hertford for their hospitality, 10 out of 10 for the sausage sandwich (I was hungry) and post-match pasta for the boys.
