When the Ruislip winger (6 foot 3 and 15 stone) sprinted half the length of the pitch to score two minutes after kick-off, I thought we were in for a long day. Especially when I looked at the average size difference and saw that Ruislip were far bigger and taller than our boys.
However, this proved to be the spark for a fantastic team effort by the boys. We simply outplayed them in every area and proved conclusively that size is not all.
In the scrum, we drove them off their own ball in the set piece. In the maul we showed more hunger than them – which lead to several turnovers. We were also stronger in the maul – and this culminated with a massive 30 metre drive in the second half. In the backs, our defence was first rate. We simply flooded them with defenders and stopped the ball going beyond their centres. In attack we ran straight and hard – going over the gain line almost every time.
The whole squad responded fantastically to the coaches threat that any slackers would be taken off immediately & played with real urgency & enthusiasm.
Outstanding contributions were:
Fergus & Jo for their direct running
Harry B for several turnovers & consistent support (which led to our first try)
Ellis for great set piece & aggressive tackling
Nick for scoring a great individual try & setting up another.
John, Oli & Jamie for gang-tackling the monster wing.
Try scorers: Harry Bambrough, Fergus White , Nick Powdrell & Steven Perrin.
Well done chaps you made us proud.
