OA U13’s B side have tough start to the new season
With the U13’s now up to a full 15 complement our first game was against Saracens at home on a beautiful sunny morning at Woolams. We didn’t have the best of starts as the ref was running late and the game started 20 minutes behind schedule. As with every early season match with the B squad we are bedding in a number of new players and coping with the promotions of key players to the A squad, this was our first full match on a full size pitch and unfortunately we were playing a very well drilled tight 15 in Saracens A squad!
As with every OA’s side the boys stuck to their task through out and worked hard at the breakdown and in contact with the opposition, but our inexperience of each other meant we lacked cohesion in our defence and our inexperience of playing across an entire pitch meant we left a lot of space on our flanks. Saracens took full advantage, bossing the breakdown during the first half and moving the ball out to their wings where the tries were predominantly scored.
OA’s superior fitness began to tell in the 2nd half but whilst we started to gain parity in the rucks and mauls our back line struggled for fluency and field position. The boys continued to defend bravely and held up a number of surges over their line with Rudy Farrell being a stand out defender in the wider channels, Fergus White marshalling their centres and Tom Jarman stopping the Saracens number 8 as he broke from the Saracens scrum. The teams commitment was fantastic, they will have better days as a team and take the lessons learnt on Sunday with them as they progress as a squad.
