On a warm day, OA U13’s played Braintree in what was our first match of junior rugby. After a request from Braintree, 3×18 minute periods were played. The first period was a test of strength with both teams blowing out their summer cobwebs as they probed for an opening; we managed to keep Braintree scoreless, however in the last play we lost James Smith to injury. Unfortunately, the injury was serious enough to take him to hospital. We all wish him well in recovery. Shortly after the restart, we manged to score as our lock Christian went over near the corner. This settled us down and soon after we scored again with Guy Butterworth making a jinking run that cut through their back line to touch down under the posts. The game moved on with a battle of lineouts and scrums on Braintree’s try line. However, Braintree stood firm and cleared their lines. We then set about rebuilding our attacking plans and manged to put Scott into space; he ran half the pitch and scored under the posts. Will Monk, our fly half, converted successfully. The next half started poorly, with ill-discipline with offside penalties and Braintree added 7 points. To the teams credit we soon bounced back with great running from Stephen Kelly and James Deeks as well as great kicking from Will, to set up Jamie who scored in the corner. Then poor defence and too many penalties almost led to Braintree scoring, however we cleared our lines and the game was won. Great rugby from everyone and a good result, especially as we were missing a few players, however the players that came up played admirably.
