On an extremely windy Sunday at Harpenden, the team performed fantastically, scoring 14 tries in their 6 games – and not conceding a single try!
The pool stage started well with a 3-0 win over Tring B. the next game – against OV & Welwyn As coincided with a downpour, which made for a very forward-oriented game. The B’s defended heroically in the first half and were unlucky not to score late in the second. The final result was a 0-0 draw.
We played a strong A team from Stevenage next – but overwhelmed them with our aggressive defence and direct running to win 4-0. This also produced our “try of the tournament” with a well-executed set of rucks followed by Jamie Beswethick selling a sublime dummy, darting through the resulting gap & outpacing the cover defence to the corner.
Next came Hertford Bs and our strength in depth showed – with another comprehensive 4-0 win.
The semi final proved to be a double header vs Harpenden (our A’s were playing Harpenden As in the cup semi). After a nervous start, we settled down and comfortably won 3-0.
The final proved to be a repeat of the pool game against OV & Welwyn As. Neither team could find a way to beat the other’s defence and the score was 0-0 at full time. The coaches therefore agreed to share the honours.
In the past, the B’s have been guilty of letting things slip in one or two pool games – but this time they kept a high level of intensity throughout. There is competition for every place in this team, and every member of the squad responded with real commitment. We proved that we are the strongest B team in the county and were only held at bay by a combined A team.
Outstanding performers on the day were:
- Ethan Phillips, with 4 tries (including 2 in the semi-final)
- Tom Jarman who filled in for several positions & proved to be a really effective impact sub
- Will Nicholas & John McVeigh continued their development as a creative partnership at 9 & 10 .
- Owen Wood & Arin Mangan also stood out with some strong rucking & big hits.
Well done to all.
