On 25th January 2015, in cold, cloudy conditions, OA’s A team played Hertford, a match which has always been close run. Right from the kick off our pack was up for it and with only 5 phases gone Christian rolled over the line to score the first try. During the first half, thanks to some outstanding hooking from Thomas Jeffcock and great strength from the rest of the forwards, we won all our scrums and one of the opposition’s. After another try from OA’s and one from Hertford, we finished the half 2-1 up. In the second half the level of physicality was astonishing, but unluckily for us Will Monk had to leave the pitch to go to hospital after a suspected broken arm. The level of determination OA’s had shown throughout the game was demonstrated in the last play when we forced Hertford back which led them to panic and throw the ball out. The game finished 2-1.
In the second game Hertford came back at us and an early injury from Guy Butterworth forced us to play with one player short, as we had already used all of our substitutes. After giving away a lot of penalties close to our line; Hertford scored.
OA’s were quick to respond with an exceptional try from Tim Davis that brought the scores level. The half ended 1-1. Hertford began the second half with a try from their captain bringing the score to 1-2. Despite our best efforts this was the final score. So the day ended with each team winning one match and the aggregate scores level.
Credit has to go to George, Sophie, Dan, Ethan and Thomas who all stepped up from the B team as several of our front line payers were not available. We all wish Will Monk well and hope he is quick to recover. Well done to all who played.
