U12 at Bishop’s Stortford festival

On a bright, but breezy day OA’s U12 attended the Bishops Stortford annual rugby festival. Our first game was against Harpenden and after a quick start, we scored 4 tries making the score 4-0. Next up we faced Hertford B team. Controlled aggression was shown in numbers as the game developed into a forwards’ game. Our forwards proved themselves and we were victorious. Upminster followed and we won the game 7-0. Our final game was against Malden, who had also won all their games so far in the festival. Whoever championed would be in the final. Disaster struck for OAs as brothers Tom and James McVeigh, our tackling maestros, pulled out injured. However, soon we had managed to score 3 tries and although there was tough play from Malden we won the game.
At last we were in the final, our opponents being Hertford. Christian one of our forwards looked unlikely to play due to injury, but bravely started. The game began and soon we had conceded a try. Unfortunately, Christian and Steven; a winger had to come off leaving us with just 11 men to Hertford’s 13. Using their overlap, Hertford added another try to their lead. Then a moment of magic was produced by our fullback Scott making the score 2-1. The overlap however was a problem but fantastic try saving tackles from Scott kept the score level until a try came out wide. Final play was called and we had a penalty scrum 5 metres out. Our prop Toby was deemed to have been held up and sadly Hertford won the match 3-1 and so the festival. Well done to all the players who played and thank you to the coaches for all their support.
