Half of the OA U9’s B’s (the Reds) took part as an OA A team in the North Hertfordshire Mini Rugby Festival held at Letchworh RFC on Sunday 12th October 2014. On a beautiful autumnal day, the Reds opened their campaign against Datchworth A’s. Two tries in each half by Charlie secured the 20-5 win. However, the hard tackling James forced three turnovers to deny Datchworth the ball. The Reds were bolstered by the addition of Alfie at half-time, who went on to make five second half tackles to ensure the Reds would not concede any points in the second half.
The Reds came out of the blocks fast in their second game against Letchworth A’s, who were hosting the Festival. Gideon led a superb defensive performance in the first half and tries from Charlie, Henry and Will had the Reds 15-5 up at half-time. However, in their worst half of rugby of the season, the Reds conceded three unanswered second half tries to lose the game 15-20. One or two missed tackles proved to be expensive as we lost an eminently winnable game.
Determined to make up for their second half performance against Letchworth A’s, Henry led the Reds out against the Royston A’s and his hard running approach was rewarded with two first half tries which had the game tied 10-10 at half-time. In the second half Charlie took up were Henry left off, with six tackles and two tries, to secure a hard fought 20-20 draw. This was a fair result against the team that would go on the win the Tournament, but heads were still hung as we knew that we could have won this game too.
In their fourth game of the tournament against Letchworth B’s, the Reds scored five tries in a free flowing game. Just before half-time Toby burst through the Letchworth defence and had the presence of mind to throw a long pass to Will who strolled over the line for his second try of the half. The game was rounded off with Ruari smashing through the Letchworth team to make the final score 25-10.
In the Reds’ final game against Hitchin A, they were determined to finish the tournament with a win. Two first half tries from Charlie had the Reds 10-0 in front at half-time. The eleven tackles from Tom in the match ensured Hitchin didn’t get over the Reds try line. Mylo finished off a good day for the Reds with a dash for the corner, rounding three Hitchin defenders to complete a 15-0 win.
The Reds finished the day having made 146 tackles, scoring 19 tries, winning three games, drawing with the tournament winners and only losing one game by one try. Another fantastic day for the Reds where they matched their North Herts rivals at an A Festival.
