The B Squad travelled to Staines this weekend travelling through driving wind and an incessant cutting wind, thankfully the rain stopped as we drew into West London but the wind carried on all day.
The Easter Holiday’s had trimmed the squad and the team played the 1st game with only 1 substitute (and he arrived just before kick off), the squad however then went on to put on a fantastic demonstration of simple running rugby. Creating fast ruck ball at the breakdown, moving the ball wide and seemingly scoring at will. Going into the last pool game against Old Guildfordians, OA’s had scored 11 unanswered tries. It was at this point the wheels came off, the team tipped into over confidence and were guilty of over complicating their approach, going down 2-0 in a scrappy error strewn game.
Having done enough to make the semi’s the squad picked themselves up and took on the form side of the competition, Old Emmanuel Lions who had won all of their pool games. Reverting to their focus on quick ball and slick hands OA’s over came the Lions winning the game by a single try, in a tough physical game. It was a case of deja vu as for the second week in a row the squad faced the team they’d played in their last pool game in the final! Old Guildfordians were in for a shock as the OA’s team they played in the final bore no resemblance to the team from the pool game, the squad played with a single minded determination, driving into contact and fearless in the tackle. Scoring a try in each half OA’s over-turned the pool form and came out champions playing intelligent and simple rugby.
