U10s made to work hard for first trophy of season at Bedford

We brought two teams to the Bedford Festival on Sunday with the aim of enjoying ourselves and hoping to win the Cup for the fourth year in a row.

Thankfully on a glorious autumnal day we managed to achieve both. We mixed our players to try and have two equally strong teams – this worked better than expected with both teams winning all their matches with the exception of against Bedford A, with whom we both drew!! Both our sides reached the Cup Final and, similar to last year we decided to play the two Bedford teams as opposed to playing against ourselves…..so we’ll never know which of our teams was stronger!!

In addition to the excellent games against Bedford A, who were a very strong, physical and committed rucking & mauling team, we played against some very sporting teams from Olney, Hemel, Old Scouts (Northampton), and Bedford B. The boys played some fabulous attacking rugby with many tries coming from moving the ball wide through several pairs of hands. We also got our first taste of competing against a top class rucking & mauling team and we know now where we need to improve.

We agreed that all 20 boys would receive cup winners trophies – the only glitch of the day was when the presenter called out one of our teams as the runners-up, as they had only 10 winners trophies…….this was soon solved by our boys when they realised a little bit of force could remove the metal band with “runners-up” written on it! So a fitting end to a very enjoyable day.
