OA U10s win Lexus Festival and qualify for the national finals

On Sunday OA’s had the pleasure of hosting one of six regional qualifiers for the Lexus National Rugby Tournament. The prize for the winning team was a trip in May to the National Finals at Worcester.

The event was brilliantly organised and great credit goes to the sponsors and all those who helped out on the day.

The Lions were missing Robert and Luke due to injury but thankfully, like the top sides in the premiership these days, we have a very strong squad! We played three teams in our pool. Our first game saw us beat a spirited Reeds Weybridge team by 4 tries to one. We followed this up with a very impressive game against St. Ives, where the boys moved the ball at pace and with plenty of great support play, this was reflected in the 5-0 result but that said St. Ives never gave up and put in some great defensive tackles. Our final pool game was against Barker’s Butt and we came though this game as 5-0 winners also.

On to the semis and a game against the unbeaten Oxford Harlequins. In a tightly fought contest our boys led 2-0 at half-time. Both defences were on top in the second half and despite the attacking efforts of both teams there were no scores in the second half, so our boys progressed to the final.

The final was against a very big and physical Colchester team. It was evident from the warm-up that our boys were tuned-in for this one……the prize of a trip to the Nationals was one they did not want to miss. The boys played their best rugby of the tournament for the first 5 minutes with outstanding contributions from all involved. After 5 minutes we led 3-0 and it was to stay like that until a late try and well deserved for Colchester made it 3-1 at the end.

It had been a great day and there were some very happy faces as the boys heard the final whistle. Well done to all of them….Charlie, Edward, Graydon, Jack, Joel, Jonathan, Max, Nathan, Ollie, Tobias and to their assistant coach Luke.
